Chapter Five

Damon wandered around the bar, feeling out of sorts and in the way.

The truth was, for the first time since he’d opened, he didn’t want to be here.

It wasn’t even the place—it was the fact that Toby wasn’t here with him

He was absolutely besotted.

Maybe even in love.

Sighing like a love-sick teenager, he leaned against the bar.

“Hey, boss. You need anything?” Terrance grinned at him.

“A distraction.” What he actually needed was Toby.

“You? I thought you were, uh…distracted with Toby Thursday.”

“Uh-huh.” He looked around the bar—maybe Toby had come in instead of calling first.

Or maybe he was just wrapped up in his work—Damon had seen firsthand how Toby lost himself in it. And it wasn’t Thursday.

“Call me if you need me,” he told Terrance, tugging his phone out of his pocket and hitting Toby’s number.

The phone rang, then Toby’s voice sounded, surrounded by loud, pounding music. “‘Lo?”

He smiled. “Hey, baby.”

“Oh. Oh, hey. Let me turn the music down.” The noise got louder, then softer again. “Sorry. I was working. How are you?”

“Honestly? Missing you.” It had been two days since he’d seen Toby.

“Oh. I’m just playing with dirt. Just finishing for the day. You…you want company, maybe?”

“I do. Very much so.”

“I have to wrap the work, clean up my tools and myself. Say a couple hours?”

“Sure. Sure. Would you like to go somewhere or…”

“I could come to you.”

“Yeah. I was thinking you could do that, and we could…well, those plugs finally showed up.”

“I… Oh. Oh, wow. I… I could… I’ll hurry.”

Oh, damn. It felt good, having Toby be as eager for him as he was for Toby.

“See you soon.”

“Yes. Yes, I’ll be there.”

“Good boy.” He laughed, ending the connection. The evening was suddenly looking up.

It took forty-five minutes before Toby came through the doors of the bar, face flushed, hair still damp.

He smiled, licked his lips. God, his boy was beautiful.

Those lovely eyes searched the crowd, lighting up when they landed on him.

He waved, watched Toby make his way over.

“Hey.” Toby beamed at him, almost bouncing. “Happy Wednesday!”

He reached out and tucked a strand of red hair behind Toby’s ear. “It is now.”

Toby beamed at him, nuzzled into his hand.

“Let’s go upstairs, eh?”

“Works for me. I ate an apple on the way.”

He stopped. “Is that all you’ve had all day?”

“Huh?”

“Have you had more than an apple to eat today?”

“I had coffee this morning.”

He rolled his eyes. “Okay, let’s detour by the kitchen.”

“I’m good.”

“No, you need to eat. Don’t worry, we’ll take whatever we get upstairs with us.” He put his arm around Toby, led him back to the little kitchen.

“You don’t have to worry.”

“I’m not worried. I am, however, going to feed you.”

“I had an apple.”

He heard Toby’s stomach rumble as they entered the kitchen.

“What do you want?”

“Uh…can I have a turkey sandwich?”

“Anything you want. Fries?”

“Uh-huh. Please. Yum.”

“Hey, Jerry, two turkey sandwiches and a double order of pub fries, please.”

“You got it, boss.”

He leaned against the counter, knowing it wouldn’t be long before they had food to take upstairs.

“What were you working on today, Toby?”

“I started something new.
